The Studio Journal
Notes on materials, planting and place
Short entries on the containers we work with, the plants we trust to settle in a UK setting, and the questions we are asked most often in the studio. Written for the kind of client who wants to understand what they are commissioning.
Materials & Containers
Beautiful Design Begins with the Right Materials
Every project starts by selecting the right planter for its setting.
Whether you're looking for the warmth of weathered terracotta, the contemporary character of patinated steel, the timeless elegance of concrete and clay, or the practicality of premium composite containers, we carefully choose materials that complement both your property and the style of the finished composition.
Alongside carefully selected mainstream products, we also source artisan and bespoke containers where a project calls for something truly individual.
Every planter is chosen for its quality, scale, durability and ability to age beautifully within its surroundings.
Mediterranean
Relaxed, warm and timeless. Weathered terracotta, olives, rosemary, architectural evergreens and natural textures combine to create compositions inspired by southern Europe.
Japanese Minimalist
Clean, balanced and understated. Sculptural planting, carefully selected specimen trees, negative space and restrained planting create elegant, calming compositions.
Luxury Contemporary
Sophisticated, modern and architectural. Concrete, steel and premium composite planters combined with bold structural planting to create striking focal points for contemporary homes and commercial spaces.
Planting & Compositions
Individually Designed. Beautiful Throughout the Year.
The planting is where every composition comes to life.
We specialise in creating low-maintenance planter arrangements that combine structure, texture and colour with lasting year-round interest. They don't just last - they mature and improve with age.
Many of our designs feature carefully selected specimen trees including Japanese Acers, Junipers, Olive Trees and architectural evergreens, complemented by ornamental grasses, Black Mondo Grass, Rosemary and other carefully chosen planting that adds movement, softness and seasonal interest.
Every composition is individually designed for its setting.
Some clients prefer the calm restraint of a Japanese-inspired entrance.
Others love the warmth of Mediterranean styling or the clean lines of a contemporary architectural statement.
Whatever your style, every planter is composed to feel balanced, elegant and entirely unique. Every piece is created with passion and care.

Finishing Touches
It's the Small Details That Complete the Picture
The materials surrounding the planting are every bit as important as the plants themselves.
Our finishing materials are carefully selected to complement both the planter and its surroundings, adding texture, contrast and refinement to the completed piece.
Depending on the design, we may use:
- Black Basalt
- Decorative Bark
- Fine Grit
- Cotswold Stone
- Moss
- Natural Pebbles
- Feature Rocks and Boulders
